1. Care
The modern world is ugly because the modern world does not care. Contemporary art is very often ugly because the care is defected to other preoccupations. For Beauty to return care must return, care for both the medium and the message. Care is defined as a human quality, irreplaceable by a machine, which consists of passion (which itself includes pleasure and humour), time spent and a desire for permanence. If there is care there is Beauty, enough said. 2. Tread carefully
I should hope that one will always try to see the Beauty in everything, no matter one’s method of doing so. If no Beauty can be discerned, the residual ugliness must be completely remodelled. I do not condone destruction. The ultimate test of beauty is the test of time. Decades will erode things made without care while beautiful things remain. 3. No use yet always a point
For the world to cherish Beauty, the world must understand how essential Beauty is. Beautiful things must be accessible and visible to all. To aid in this endeavour I encourage wholeheartedly the teaching of philosophy, classics and history of art in all schools, the affordability of historical landmarks and museums and the use of grants for books, performances and travel. All art is quite useless, and we have let ourselves equate that fact to pointlessness.
